Deep hole DFM check
Deep hole overview
Drilling deep holes is not a simple task and requires careful consideration of various factors such as drill geometry, coolant supply, chip removal, and machine rigidity.
During the drilling process, chips and heat generated from the cutting action accumulate in the hole and can cause tool wear and failure, as well as damage to the workpiece.
Another challenge is maintaining the straightness and accuracy of the hole. As the drill penetrates deeper into the workpiece, it may deflect due to the increased cutting forces.
Deep hole detection conditions
MTK identifies this issue when the following condition is met:
where:
- — actual hole depth
- — actual hole diameter
- — expected maximum hole depth to diameter ratio
How MTK detects deep holes
MTK automatically analyzes B-Rep CAD models for deep holes. The SDK checks the relevant geometry against DFM criteria to identify potential issues that can increase manufacturing complexity or cost, or lead to quality or assembly problems.
Documentation and API reference
Detailed API reference for the deep hole DFM check is provided in the MTK documentation, including issue classes, detection interfaces, and integration details.
