Small distance between hole and edge DFM check
Small distance between hole and edge overview
When a hole is drilled too close to the edge of a sheet metal part, it can create stress concentration in the metal around the hole.
The stress concentration is caused by the abrupt change in geometry at the edge of the hole, which can cause the metal to deform, crack, or even fail. This can be especially problematic in parts that will experience high loads or stress, as it can compromise the integrity of the part and its ability to perform its intended function.
Small distance between hole and edge detection conditions
MTK identifies this issue when the following condition is met:
where:
- — actual distance between hole and edge
- — actual thickness
- — expected minimum distance between hole and edge to sheet thickness ratio
How MTK detects small distances between holes and edges
MTK automatically analyzes B-Rep CAD models for small distances between holes and edges. The SDK checks the relevant geometry against DFM criteria to identify potential issues that can increase manufacturing complexity or cost, or lead to quality or assembly problems.
Documentation and API reference
Detailed API reference for the small distance between hole and edge DFM check is provided in the MTK documentation, including issue classes, detection interfaces, and integration details.
