Small radius internal corner DFM check (milling)
Small radius internal corner overview
A small radius internal corner can be problematic in CNC machining milling design due to the difficulty of clearing material from the corner with a cutting tool.
Cutting tools have a finite diameter and cannot produce a sharp internal corner, resulting in a small radius. This small radius can create stress points in the workpiece and may not satisfy design requirements for a sharp corner.
Additionally, the small radius can be difficult to machine, requiring specialized tooling or techniques to create a high-quality surface finish.
Small radius internal corner detection conditions
MTK identifies this issue when the following condition is met:
where:
- — actual internal corner radius
- — actual internal corner depth
- — expected maximum internal corner depth to radius ratio
How MTK detects small radius internal corners
MTK automatically analyzes B-Rep CAD models for small radius internal corners. The SDK checks the relevant geometry against DFM criteria to identify potential issues that can increase manufacturing complexity or cost, or lead to quality or assembly problems.
Documentation and API reference
Detailed API reference for the small radius internal corner DFM check is provided in the MTK documentation, including issue classes, detection interfaces, and integration details.
