Small wall thickness DFM check (CNC machining)
Small wall thickness overview
Small wall thickness issue in CNC machining milling design refers to the challenge of machining features with thin walls.
This issue arises due to the limitations imposed by the cutting tools, machining parameters, and material properties. When milling thin walls, they are more prone to part distortion and breakage caused by tool vibration. Therefore, it is recommended to maintain wall thicknesses at least 0.8 mm for stability during manufacture.
Small wall thickness detection conditions
MTK identifies this issue when the following condition is met:
where:
- — distance between two faces
- — minimal expected distance
How MTK detects small wall thicknesses
MTK automatically analyzes B-Rep CAD models for small wall thicknesses. The SDK checks the relevant geometry against DFM criteria to identify potential issues that can increase manufacturing complexity or cost, or lead to quality or assembly problems.
Documentation and API reference
Detailed API reference for the small wall thickness DFM check is provided in the MTK documentation, including issue classes, detection interfaces, and integration details.
